Whale Shark Awareness Distinctive

The Whale Sharks of Utila are one of the most reliably present populations in the world; they are also the least studied. The PADI Whale Shark Awareness Distinctive aims to educate the diver and non diver alike about the largest sharks on earth, as well as having your own personal encounter! It is operated through the Project Aware and Protect the Sharks projects.

The course consists of presentations, videos and discussion with our Biologist Dale Forbes. The program was developed by PADI, Project Aware, the Shark Trust and Eco Ocean to educate and enlist the help of divers in cataloging the worlds whale shark populations. Not only will you learn about the Whale Sharks but about the ecosystems that sharks exist in, and how you can help save the sharks.

The next morning you and your class will leave on your own boat specifically for the purpose of finding, identifying and encountering Whale Sharks. You will be involved in the process of visual ID, photographing and conducting behavioral research. Every trip is approached from a scientific perspective, so expect to get educated         ...and wet!
