THE PADI DIVEMASTER COURSE AT BAY ISLANDS COLLEGE OF DIVING

As a divemaster candidate, you will learn how a dive boat runs, how to organize a group for a dive, assist PADI Instructors in training situations, and increase your dive knowledge as a whole. Log dives, hone your in-water skills to impress your fellow dive professionals and become a steward for Utilas’ clear blue water and pristine reef.

The PADI Divemaster course includes workshops for programs that you, as a PADI Divemaster, will be allowed to conduct in the field. For example, you will learn how to organize and conduct Scuba Reviews, teach the PADI Skin Diver Course and how to conduct portions of the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program. You will learn how to lead certified divers on dive excursions; Under the direct supervision of our highly trained team of PADI accredited instructors, you will take out actual customers and learn how to be in charge of their safety and provide them with unforgettable diving experiences. In addition, you will become a member of a close-knit group of fun, like-minded people who have also made the decision to work and play hard! Come and have a blast on Utila!

The Bay Islands College of Diving has been in the professional diver development for over 25 years and has certified hundreds of PADI Divemasters and Instructors who now enjoy successful careers all over the world. We have been awarded many times because of our continuous effort and dedication to the highest standards of teaching. We believe that this perfectionist philosophy is especially apparent in our Divemaster program. The Divemaster course is notable for the flexibility of its teaching approach.

Some people come to Utila with all the prerequisites completed and get started right away, whereas others may need a bit more time to collect the required 40 dives or an EFR refresher to get started. That is why the Bay Islands College of Diving offers their Divemaster candidates fun dives for only 7(!) USD per dive to get up to 40 and free diving for life after certification if you bring your own gear (Otherwise rental fee applies). This allows everyone to get to the point where they feel confident and proficient as both a diver and a future PADI professional.

Most of the Divemaster candidates at the Bay Islands College of Diving take about 4-6 weeks to complete the program, but because of the flexibility afforded to us by our staff, we can accommodate individuals with shorter available time frames. Regardless of how much time you can spend with us, you will have the opportunity to fine-tune your underwater chops in our rigorous skills circuits, assist on more classes with our role model PADI instructors and enjoy all the other extra free workshops that Bay Islands College of Diving offers with their PADI Divemaster program.

At Bay Islands College of Diving, we believe in building diving careers. The list of free workshops that we offer reflects that. Every single one of these workshops will become extremely valuable dive experiences on your resume as a PADI Divemaster. You will receive a tour and explanation about the operations and procedures of the onsite Utila Hyperbaric Chamber and Trauma Center. On top of that, you can partake in a Distinctive Field Neurological Exam Specialty course. It is ‘distinctive’ because WE wrote it. As part of this workshop, our students will learn how to assess divers for potential decompression sickness and learn how to fill out the proper reports for the authorities and medical professionals. This knowledge will set you apart from the average PADI Divemaster and will demonstrate your personal dedication to diving safety and professionalism. We also offer all of our Divemaster candidates the unique opportunity to experience a ‘dry dive’ inside of the hyperbaric chamber.

The Lionfish is an invasive species in the Caribbean sea and is reproducing fast, destroying other species and habitats as they reproduce. Because the Bay Islands College of Diving believes in responsible behavior towards the marine environment, we organize a Lionfish containment workshop for our Divemasters in training. As part of that training, you will learn how to handle a ‘Hawaiïan sling” (the only type of spear that is allowed in Utila) and how to quickly and painlessly remove invasive Lionfish from the reefs. With our partners at the Whale Shark and Oceanic Research Center, our trainees go on joint lionfish hunts and offered the opportunity to participate in dissections afterward. The product of the dissections gets prepared for samples so you even get to taste them, nothing goes to waste.

In the spirit of conservation, we are proud to be offering all of our PADI Divemaster candidates a free AWARE Coral Reef Conservation specialty. Did you know that only 0.1% of our oceans consist of reef, yet over 25% of all marine species live on that reef? The knowledge of the worlds oceanic ecosystems that this specialty course will teach you gives you the opportunity to spread the word about the preservation that these coral reefs, and the marine life that calls them home, need.

After your PADI Divemaster course with Bay Islands College of Diving, you and your mentor, one of our most experienced staff members, will get together and build your very own diving resumè. Because our Divemaster mentors have years of experience in the diving industry and know what it takes to be a successful PADI Professional, they know what potential employers might be looking for and will serve as a great professional reference on your curriculum vitae!
